Survival is based on simple principles, which include basic survival skills, but these skills alone will not save your life, it is your mental attitude and determination that will ultimately determine whether live or die, by nature we are all survivors, driven by the desire to live rather than die, fired up by fear whenever our live are threatened. However, in purely physical terms, we are poorly equipped to stand up either to the environment or to our nature enemies.
Although urban man is generally out of touch with the natural world, and finds it more threatening than his ancestors did, he can easily adapt to surviving in the wild if he has to. The biggest threat to survival is fear, but this can be overcome with a little knowledge and imagination, it is impossible to predict what disasters may occur, so you cannot learn specific survival skills to cover every option, understanding the basic principles of survival is far more important than learning techniques by rote, particularly since most techniques require some modification every time they are used. Nothing is easy, no matter how well trained you might be, but if you learn the basics, you should be able to adapt to a variety of different situations.
Modern technology often masks the basic principles by which all physical work in done. We create machines for every job, freeing ourselves form tasks that would otherwise take up most of our time. We forget the physics by which everything from weather through to the tools we improvise actually functions. We may have learned and understood a great deal in our lives so far, but much of this knowledge is locked away in our minds, and we are not always able to apply it to real life situation. Urban life generally tends to make us inflexible in the practical application of our knowledge simply because we almost never find ourselves in the kind of situations where there is no option but to improvise in order to survive.
In survival situations, the will to survive is all important, ultimately, your mind controls your body, and when the mind gives up, the body will fail to survive. If your mental attitude is wrong, then no amount of survival knowledge or training will save you, without doubt, the most important aids to survival are the abilities to remain calm and optimistic, and to concentrate the mind and adapt to the new situation. In real life survival situations, the desire to get out can be so strong that it takes over all conscious thought, creating a self defeating frame of mind; thoughts of home and family fill the mind, driving people to a state of mental hopelessness. In normal life, we are surrounded by everything we need to live comfort. In an emergency situation, all the trappings and comfort of modern living can be unexpectedly stripped away, forcing us to adapt both mentally and physically to primitive ways of staying alive.

Depression can involve a feeling of hopelessness or inability to cope, perhaps in the face of overwhelming difficulties or repeated failure, anxiety can be linked to depression, and the symptoms in many people involve slowing down and listlessness, depression can be made worse by feeling of guilt or personal fault, especially where there is little reassurance to the contrary. A depression person may feel that anyone else would have performed better in particular circumstances, this way result from over competitive or dominating behavior by others. A cure for this negative way of thinking is for the depressed person to think about and develop their personal gifts and to take sensible measures in dealing with weaknesses. Anxiety will reduce performance if steps are not taken to counter it; the best short term way of coping is to try to identify the particular problems causing the anxiety. Write them down and deal with them one by one, as you deal with the problems that are making you anxious, you are likely to become more confident and less anxious.
It is natural to suffer stress in a survival environment, especially one that has involved any kind of accident. Stress is the body’s natural way of dealing with problems that require urgent reactions indeed, in right circumstances, it will improve performance. If the stress factor continues for a long period, however, the body’s reactions become very tiring and this actually reduces the ability of the individual to cope, exposure to stressful situations can cause symptoms of anxiety or depression, such as palpitations, indigestion and muscular aches and pains. The best way to deal with stress is to attempt to control it. This is difficult; you will feel a strong urge to let the body’s reactions rule you and you may lose your composure. However, your ability to control it will improve with practice. When circumstances allow, make a conscious effort to calm your racing mind and to slow your physical movements, unless, of course, you are in an emergency, such as a fire, where you need to think and move very fast. Identify the problems that are stressing you, itemize them and set about dealing with them one by one. Mood swings are often a natural part of an outdoor survival situation when people are tired or under pressure, so be cautious about making snap diagnoses and possibly alienating a member of your group. However, displays of uncharacteristic behavior among your party members may well signal that it is time to stop and rest, giving everyone physical and mental rest and recuperation. Remember, no matter how bad the situation is, the only things that will get you out of the predicament are skills combined with both your physical and mental abilities.
Remain calm, do not allow panic to cloud the mind, you may to be aware of it, but you already have the necessary qualities to survive, determination, perseverance, ingenuity and humor. All you need to do now is to mentally adapt to your new circumstances. You may not be used to having to go out and forage for food or to locate sources of water. But remember that the qualities and skills you use in finding and holding down a job, and in negotiating the best deal for yourself and your family in your daily life, are similar to those that men and women have used to find shelter, warmth and food for themselves and their families. Your senses, somewhat dulled by urban comforts, will become sharper and your mind will focus and being preparing a survival plan. As long as you maintain a strong will to survive, you will overcome setback and being to master your environment.
Survival depends on making the right decisions, the shock of being cut off from the usual supports of civilization from food, water, shelter, warmth and companionship, will vary according to your circumstances and training. Whatever your background or however well prepared for the situation in which you find yourself, it is vitally important to get over the initial trauma as quickly as possible. always remember that the situation you are in is perhaps no different to those that men a women have known and survived for centuries, even to this days.
